$CICADAThe Cicada Room
A sleep researcher studying a boy sleepless for 89 days discovers his brainwaves sync to the ultrasonic mating song of a 17-year cicada brood that hatched the night his insomnia began, as something ancient counts down inside the lab walls.
A sleep researcher studying a boy sleepless for 89 days discovers his brainwaves sync to the ultrasonic mating song of a 17-year cicada brood that hatched the night his insomnia began, as something ancient counts down inside the lab walls.
Synopsis
Dr. Lena Voss has turned her soundproofed sleep lab into a fortress against the world, but when 13-year-old Lucas arrives—awake since the Brood XVII cicadas burst from the soil outside—she finds his EEG spiking in perfect, eerie harmony with their ultrasonic calls. Night after night the walls hum with invisible countdowns, and Lena begins to hear the insects whispering through Lucas's silence, their ancient rhythm rewriting human sleep itself. As the lab's instruments glitch and Lucas's body starts to vibrate at frequencies that crack glass, Lena uncovers the truth: the cicadas didn't just emerge; they chose him as a bridge, and the lab is their next hatching chamber. Colleagues dismiss her data until the first body is found cocooned in the ventilation shafts, wings still twitching. In a final race against the 17-year clock, Lena must decide whether to sever the link or surrender to the swarm's promise of a world that never needs to sleep again.
The story
Dr. Lena Voss admits 13-year-old Lucas into her isolated sleep lab after 89 sleepless nights; the night the 17-year cicadas emerge, his EEG begins matching their ultrasonic calls exactly.
Strange vibrations rattle the walls, instruments fail, and hallucinations bleed into reality as the countdown accelerates and the swarm claims its first victims inside the facility.
Lena confronts the truth that Lucas is the bridge and chooses to destroy the lab, breaking the cycle at the cost of her own sanity and the swarm's rebirth.
The cast
Brilliant neurologist who sacrificed her marriage and health to map the boundaries of human consciousness, now questioning if consciousness itself is an illusion.
dream cast: Rooney Mara
A quiet, unnervingly calm boy whose insomnia began the instant the cicadas hatched; he speaks rarely but seems to understand the swarm's language.
dream cast: Jacob Tremblay
Lucas's estranged geneticist father who funded the study in secret, hiding his own role in triggering the emergence through experimental soil treatments.
dream cast: Oscar Isaac
Lena's pragmatic lab partner who dismisses the cicada theory until she witnesses the first metamorphosis firsthand.
dream cast: Riz Ahmed
The night-shift nurse who records the impossible data and becomes the first to feel the vibrations under her skin.

INT. SLEEP LAB - NIGHT Rain hammers the reinforced windows. DR. LENA VOSS, 38, watches the EEG screen flicker as 13-year-old LUCAS lies motionless on the bed, eyes open, chest barely moving. Outside, the earth splits. A low, ultrasonic CHIRP builds—thousands of cicadas erupting from the soil in perfect synchrony. On the monitor, Lucas's brainwaves spike to the exact same frequency. LENA (whispering) Eighty-nine days. You started the same night they woke up. Lucas smiles faintly without blinking. The walls emit a faint, rhythmic CLICK, like a clock counting backward. Lena presses her ear to the drywall. Something inside answers with a wet, metallic thrum. LUCAS (softly) They're almost ready.
Why now
In an era of epidemic sleep deprivation, accelerating climate shifts that scramble insect cycles, and collective exhaustion from endless screens and crises, The Cicada Room taps primal fears of nature evolving beyond human control while questioning whether perpetual wakefulness is liberation or extinction.
