Synopsis

In a rain-slicked Tokyo loft, burnt-out key animator Ren Kurosawa unearths a lost hand-drawn pipeline that transforms his pencil tests into living cel-shaded nightmares. When his brooding anti-heroine leaps off the page and starts rewriting his memories in lurid 90s color palettes, Ren must race through collapsing cityscapes of his own design to stop her from overwriting the real world. As deadlines melt into deadlines and every cut bleeds ink, he discovers the workflow was never his invention—it was a forgotten studio curse waiting for a desperate artist to revive it.

The story

Act I

Ren, a washed-up animator in present-day Tokyo, tests a mysterious previs-to-cel workflow on his own rejected characters and watches them twitch to life in perfect retro style.

Act II

His fiercest creation, a vengeful schoolgirl assassin, crosses the fourth wall, hijacks his studio, and begins redrawing Ren’s past to fuel her rampage through a dissolving city of half-finished frames.

Act III

Ren confronts the curse’s origin in the abandoned 1997 studio vault, sacrifices his final reel to trap the character inside a closed loop, and walks away as the last reel burns—leaving only one surviving cel of himself smiling in the rain.

INT. RAIN-SOAKED TOKYO LOFT - NIGHT

Rain hammers the skylight. REN KUROSAWA, 32, unshaven, hunches over a massive animation desk lit by a single cathode monitor. Stacks of punched paper surround him.

REN
Just one more pass... make it sing.

He flips the switch on a battered lightbox. Pencil tests flicker. A schoolgirl silhouette sharpens into full 90s cel-shaded glory—YUKI SHADOW. Her eyes snap open. Ink bleeds outward.

The monitor cracks. Yuki’s hand punches through glass, fingers dripping paint. Ren stumbles back as she steps into the room, uniform crisp, katana gleaming.

YUKI
You drew me to kill. Now I draw the rules.

Lightning flashes. The loft’s walls become unfinished storyboards. Yuki’s blade slices a panel; reality folds.

Why now

Nineties anime nostalgia is peaking across every platform while creators openly question what tools truly belong in the frame; this story weaponizes that exact anxiety into pure kinetic spectacle.
