Synopsis
Year 2147. Earth is a scarred chessboard of corporate factions. Open-cockpit mechs like the Scorpion-017 allow pilots hyper-precise control at the cost of total exposure to radiation, shrapnel, and enemy optics. Pilot Kai Reyes and his three-mech recon team are tasked with mapping a new enemy rail cannon before it fires on the last human city. As drones swarm and terrain collapses, the open cockpits turn every skirmish into a high-stakes game of chicken; one cracked viewport means instant death. Kai’s mech begins to bond with him in dangerous ways, feeding him real-time sensory data that blurs the line between man and machine. Betrayed by command and outnumbered, the squad must decide whether to complete the mission or save each other in a final desperate sprint across mined salt flats.
The story
Kai, a washed-out drone jockey, is reassigned to Scorpion-017 for a high-risk patrol. The team launches at dawn under orders to photograph the rail cannon or die trying.
Drones exploit the open cockpits, picking off squad members one by one. Kai’s mech fuses with his nervous system, granting godlike reflexes but threatening to erase his humanity.
Alone and half-machine, Kai reaches the cannon, transmits the data, then chooses to detonate his own cockpit reactor rather than let the enemy capture the tech.

Cold open
EXT. CRATERED SALT FLATS - DAWN Wind howls across glassed earth. Three scorpion-shaped mechs, cockpits open to the toxic air, crawl on six legs. Inside the lead machine, KAI REYES, 22, goggles strapped to his helmet, sweat freezing on his face. KAI (into comms) Eyes on rail signature. Two klicks. No cover. ZARA KWAN, cockpit to his left, scans the horizon. ZARA Then we don’t stop. Scorpions stay fast or stay dead. Suddenly a DRONE SWARM rises like locusts. Tracer fire rips the air. Kai’s viewport cracks. He tastes blood and ozone. KAI They’re targeting the glass— A drone slams into Rico’s open cockpit. Sparks. A scream cut short. Kai’s mech rears, legs pistoning, and sprints straight into the swarm. KAI (CONT'D) Hold on, girl. We fly low.
Why now
Open-cockpit warfare mirrors today’s drone-operator vulnerability and the hunger for raw human control amid autonomous weapons, tapping into fears of AI detachment and the desire for tactile, high-stakes heroism.
